In 2016, the park opened an outdoor amphitheater on Discovery River (near the base of Expedition Everest) with nightly entertainment-initially, with the temporary show "Jungle Book: Alive with Magic" and then replaced with "Rivers of Light" for which the amphitheater was purpose-built. In early 2006, the park added Expedition Everest, a high-speed roller coaster that takes passengers forward and backward toward their inevitable confrontation with the legendary Yeti. Many loved spending a full day slowly working through the animal viewing areas and taking breaks with rides and shows (Festival of the Lion King remains extremely popular after many years). For many years, the park was criticized by some as being too light of an experience-that it was only a "half-day" park. Disney's Animal Kingdom, which opened on Earth Day, April 22, 1998, is the newest of Walt Disney World's four theme parks.
